Liability vs. Full Coverage for Motorcycles

Liability coverage is the standard legal minimum and protects third parties if you cause an accident, while full coverage adds protection against collision and theft for your bike. Motorcycle full coverage is uncommon among Mexican insurers—most only offer liability, so if you also own a car, our car insurance policies follow the same liability structure and can be bundled for easier renewal.

Riding on a Foreign Driver’s License

If you split your time between different vehicles or borrow bikes from friends, consider our driver’s license insurance, which ties liability coverage to you as a rider instead of to a single motorcycle.

What to Do After an Accident

If you’re in an accident on your motorcycle, call our claims line right away for step-by-step instructions and to be connected with an adjuster from Qualitas.

Coverage and amounts may vary by insurer and policy terms; motorcycle policies do not include medical expense coverage.

Riding Across the Border

If you plan to ride from the U.S. into Mexico, confirm your motorcycle insurance is valid the moment you cross, since most American and Canadian policies stop covering you at the border. A Mexican motorcycle insurance policy through Qualitas fills that gap and keeps you protected for day trips or extended stays in Baja California.

Riders who split time between the U.S. and Mexico often ask whether they need separate motorcycle insurance for each side of the border. The short answer is yes — a U.S. policy typically excludes Mexico entirely, and Mexican law requires proof of Mexican liability coverage if you’re involved in an accident.

Gear, Accessories, and Seasonal Riding

Ask your agent whether aftermarket accessories like saddlebags, custom exhausts, or upgraded suspension are covered under your motorcycle insurance policy, since standard coverage sometimes only applies to the bike as it left the factory. Documenting upgrades with photos and receipts makes it easier to add them to your policy or file a claim later.

Baja California’s dry climate makes it appealing for year-round riding, but sudden rains and shifting road conditions in the mountains still catch riders off guard. Reviewing safety guidance from a resource like the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is a good habit regardless of which side of the border you’re riding on, and it pairs well with having the right motorcycle insurance in place before you head out.

Whether you’re commuting through Rosarito or taking weekend rides down the coast, having motorcycle insurance in place before you head out means one less thing to worry about if the unexpected happens. Talk to an agent about which combination of liability and full coverage fits how you actually ride.
