Who This Policy Is For

A driver’s license insurance policy makes sense if you regularly switch between vehicles, share driving duties with family members, or bring an older, paid-off car into Mexico that isn’t worth insuring individually. Rather than insuring one vehicle, this policy attaches liability coverage to each listed driver, so anyone named on the policy is covered regardless of which car, truck, or SUV they’re driving. If you’re only ever driving one specific vehicle, our car insurance policies may be a simpler, cheaper fit.

What’s Not Covered

This policy is liability-only: it doesn’t cover damage to or theft of the vehicle, and it doesn’t cover motorcycles or RVs. If you ride a motorcycle in addition to driving, you’ll need a separate motorcycle insurance policy, since Mexican liability rules apply per vehicle type.

Choosing the Right Number of Drivers

Pricing scales by how many drivers you add to the policy — useful for families or households where more than one person gets behind the wheel. Not sure which tier fits your situation? Our Rosarito-based agents can walk through your specific driving pattern and recommend the right coverage before you buy.

Do You Need This If You’re Visiting From the U.S. or Canada?

If you’re driving your own car across the border and it’s already covered under a separate Mexican auto policy, you likely don’t need this one — driver’s license insurance is built for the opposite situation, where the vehicle changes but the driver doesn’t. It’s a good fit for renting a car locally, borrowing a family member’s vehicle in Baja California, or covering a household where several people take turns behind the wheel of the same car. The U.S. Department of State’s Mexico travel guidance recommends carrying proof of Mexican insurance any time you’re behind the wheel, regardless of which policy type covers you.

What To Keep In The Car

Once your policy is active, keep a copy of your policy documents and your driver’s license in the vehicle any time you’re driving. If you’re stopped or involved in an accident, having your policy number and ID ready makes it much easier for the responding officer or adjuster to confirm your coverage quickly.
